On-Site Laser Safety Training Courses

Principles of Lasers

RLI routinely conducts training courses at the client's location. Our courses can be tailored to the specific requirements of applications at your facility. Emphasis can be centered on what's important to you, including reviews of the federal, state and local regulations applicable to your site.

RLI can provide courses in various durations. For example, RLI provides a standard one-half day Basic Laser Safety program which covers the protection of workers, and inspection (where applicable) of areas where lasers are installed and tested.

Multiple courses can be combined. For example a combination package containing the Laser Safety Office course and the Meaurements for Laser Safety course could be taught.

Course Description:

For those new to laser technology or for those who want to expand their knowledge as they take on responsibility for laser safety:

This one-day introductory course is designed for those responsible for operating and maintaining laser systems, providing a solid introduction to lasers. It also provides a knowledge base for those who plan to continue their professional development and will be attending the Laser Safety Officer (LSO) course. In addition, the course benefits those who have management responsibility for lasers and/or laser safety.

The course provides a general overview of types of lasers and how laser light differs from that produced by the sun and other "ordinary" light sources. The participant also learns about laser operation, terminology and beam properties. Common types of lasers including specific gas, solid-state, and diode lasers are discussed and an overview of laser optics and beam delivery systems is included.

Students attending this course will receive:

  • Course Notebook
  • RLI User's Guide to Laser Safety
  • Lazan™ QuickCalc

As with all RLI courses, this course has been carefully crafted to include the most important concepts in theory and practices to optimize the learning experience for all attendees. Our courses are widely recognized for providing the most practical and useful information. Our instructors have many years of experience, and actively participate on ANSI and IEC committees to bring you the most current information in regards to laser safety.

Course Topics:

  • Laser concepts
  • Differences between laser light and ordinary light
  • Types of electromagnetic radiation
  • Spontaneous and stimulated emission of radiation
  • Types of lasers
  • Components common to all laser types
  • Discussion of gas, solid state, diode and liquid dye lasers
  • Laser output characteristics
  • Radiometric terms and units for lasers
  • Continuous wave, single and repetitively pulsed outputs
  • Laser optics and components
  • The interaction of light with matter
  • Laser optics and beam delivery systems
